Two more teams celebrate qualifying for the 2018 Youth Olympic Games

Futsal is a new discipline contested at the Youth Olympic Games sports programme. The futsal competition at the 2018 Summer Youth Olympic Games will take place at the La Rural and the Parque Polideportivo Roca, both located in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Based on a decision by the FIFA, futsal will replace for the first time  the standard 11-a-side format. This move may help to control costs by reducing the number of participating athletes, depending on the number of teams qualifying for the Youth Olympic competition.

It also appears to be in line with the views of those who see the Youth Games, whose inaugural edition was in 2010, as an opportunity to experiment with sports and formats that are in tune with youth culture and might one day be admitted to the main event of the Olympic Games themselves.

The Youth Olympic Games is an international multi-sport event, designated for athletes aged 15 to 18 from over 200 countries around the world.

In addition to host nation Argentina, 9 national under-18 teams will qualify from six separate continental confederations. Previously, Iran team from AFC had already qualified for the the 2018 Youth Olympic Games.

The Solomon Islands youth men’s team and the New Zealand youth women’s team have also booked their tickets to the 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires after securing clean sweeps in the OFC Youth Futsal Tournament at Bruce Pulman Arena in Auckland, New Zealand, this Saturday, 7 October.
