Actually, the tournament will be the second AFF Futsal Championship to be held in 2017, with the first originally meant to be hosted in 2016 in Thailand, but was canceled due to the passing of King Bhumiphol Adulyadej, the King of Thailand. Efforts to find a replacement venue were unsuccessful, the FA of Indonesia (PSSI) and also the FA of Singapore (FAS) had then tried to step in as hosts but due to certain technical difficulties, and in view of time constraint, the AFF Futsal Championship 2016 was pushed back to early 2017. Finally, the tournament had been held in January 2017 in Bangkok, where the Thai national futsal team won its 12th title.
