Russia started the Youth Olympics Futsal Final with an embarrassing own goal

The Brazilians took the lead with only 1:47 on the clock, but how they did that was a shock to everyone at the Main Futsal Hall in Buenos Aires. Russian player Danil Karpuik wanted to interrupt his opponent’s dangerous attack by carrying out the ball, but instead hit an unstoppable shot into his own net.

And that was only the beginning of Russia’s worries, as Brazil ended up the gold medal match with the 4:1 score  – rounded off by an incredible goal from the Brazilian keeper from inside his own area to ensure Brazil would be crowned futsal’s first Olympic champions.

It was no shock, then, that Brazil took the gold. It was among the favourites from the first match and had won all five of their previous games at Youth Olympic Futsal Tournaments Buenos Aires 2018. So, taking into account that Brazil is for sure among the most successful nations in the history of men’s futsal, Russia can be proud of winning the silver medal.

The match for the bronze, which took place earlier same day, was also very impressive. Egypt managed to beat hosts Argentina 5:4, despite the fact that the Argentinians surged into a 3:0 lead inside the opening ten minutes. The Egyptian player Mohamed Talaat was the real star of the match, scoring 4 out of 5 his team’s goals in a thrilling battle for the bronze.

In the women’s tournament, Ana Sofia Goncalves struck all four of her side’s goals as Portugal beat Japan 4:1 in the gold medal match on this Wednesday. In the match for the bronze, Spain secured the bronze medal with 11:0 win over Bolivia, with Antonia Martinez and Yarima Miranda both netting hat-tricks and Antia Perez bagging a brace.
